Festival travelers battle heavy fog

01-30-2014 20:43 BJT Special Report: 2014 Spring Festival |

Not everyone has been able to return home for lunar new year’s eve. Heavy fog blanketed several regions in central China on Thursday. Expressways have been closed and more than 219 flights have been delayed or cancelled.

The foggy weather hit most cities in central China’s Hunan and Hubei provinces and southeast Jiangxi province on Wednesday evening, disrupting travel plans for millions of Chinese trying to get home for Chinese New Year’s Eve.

So far Beijing has seen the largest crowd leaving the city.

According to Baidu, China’s top search engine, as of seven o’clock Thursday afternoon, four of the ten hottest routes start from the capital. The four municipalities, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing all made the list of the most popular destinations as well as places of departure.
