Starting the New Year with a bang

02-01-2014 22:29 BJT Special Report: 2014 Spring Festival |

Waves of people are flooding both sides of iconic Victoria Harbor on the second day of the year of the horse. The Lunar New Year Fireworks Display in Hong Kong is an annual event to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is also the world’s largest lighting and music show.

Traditionally, fireworks were set off to ward off evil spirits, with their loud bangs and bright lights. Now, they’ve become a reason for friends and family to gather along the waterfront and celebrate.

Six thousand kilograms of fireworks were transported into Victoria Harbor by boat on Tuesday. Many people are concerned about the environmental affects. But the wind along the harbour is expected to dissipate the smoke fast. And to make it safer, Hong Kong regulations require all the fireworks are to be made of natural materials like wood, paper and clay.
