China's crackdown on prostitution led to nearly 1,000 suspects detained

02-20-2014 03:57 BJT

Police have launched an anti-prostitution campaign across China, following the crackdown in the southern city of Dongguan. The Ministry of Public Security says investigations have begun in several provinces.

It says police have broken up 73 vice rings and closed down 2,410 prostitution and gambling dens over the past week. Nearly a thousand suspects have been detained. In a warning to what the authorities call the "protective umbrella" of official collusion, the ministry says officials will be "investigated seriously, and crimes will be resolutely investigated".

Earlier this month, police cracked down multiple prostitution groups in Dongguan city. The local police chief, who was also the vice mayor, was sacked last Friday for dereliction of duty, together with seven other city officials.
