Crossover: Rising role of CPPCC in China's politics

03-03-2014 22:25 BJT Special Report: 2014 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

And for more discussion on how to improve the way the CPPCC functions, let’s talk to our guests again.

1. We can see that a lot of foreign media are pessimistic about the prospects of China’s economy. What are your expectations for proposals or measures that come out of the two sessions aimed at boosting the economy?

2. Saturday’s Kunming railway station terrorist attack underlined the major challenges facing China’s domestic security. It’s expected that China’s National Security Committee will be formally established during the week. Has it become a much bigger priority?

3. It’s hard to deny that the importance of the CPPCC is rising in China’s politics.

4. Proposals made by the national members now have a mechanism to receive feedback. Prof. Wang, What’s your personal experience of the progress made by the CPPCC?

5. Laurence, you have stayed in China for decades - how do you view the developments in the CPPCC and China’s political system? What improvements can be made?

6. In fact, the CPPCC is not a national authoritative organization. It’s an advisory body. Local chairs of the CPPCC used to be standing committee members from the local party organization. But last year, in all 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions the provincial CPPCC chairs quit the provincial party standing committees. What’s your view on this development? Is it a setback or a sign of progress?
