Studio interview: Defining the China Dream

03-04-2014 21:08 BJT Special Report: 2014 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

We now turn back to our studio guests again to talk more about China Dream.

Q1. When we try to define the China dream in a more specific way, do you prefer to evaluate in material terms, from the size and strength of China’s military to the scale of its financial assets, or in spiritual terms, also known as its soft power?

Q2. Foreign media tend to defame the China dream as “new nationalism.” US NEWSWEEK asserts that a stronger mandate for China’s new dreams “could make its neighbors even more nervous.” Is it possible to reassure our neighbors that Beijing’s dream would not become a nightmare for China’s neighboring countries or the rest of the world?

Q3. The interpretation of China’s foreign policy from the outside world in the past decade has sounded catastrophic. Deng Xiaoping’s policy of “keeping a low profile” was misread as “hiding its ambitions and disguising its claws.” Would the talk of a China dream bring new dynamics into China’s foreign policy?

Q4. Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew is well known as an advocate of “Asian values”, which basically means a belief in disciplined societies that put the common good ahead of the rights of the individual. Some say it’s a total denial of Western democracy. What’s your take?

Q5. Europe suffered a lot during World War II and the recovery was not easy. Yet the Europeans achieved their common goals: regionalization, economic recovery and elimination of the Cold War threat. As far as today’s Asia is concerned, do we still have a common ground and common aims?
