Studio interview: China Dream: National and personal dreams

03-04-2014 21:53 BJT Special Report: 2014 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

Let’s turn to our studio guests once again for more analysis.

1. In Chairman Mao Zedong’s years, China’s goals were centered on unity, strength and state's wealth. What about the China dream today, is it more about the “dream of China as a country” or “dream of the Chinese people”? Do you see a balancing point between personal and national dreams?

2. The Chinese may have a nationalistic reputation, but when asked to pick their ideal country, more than a third are looking to the US, according to a recent survey by advertising group WPP. It’s a stark contrast to the results in the US and Britain, where respondents mostly chose their own country as ideal, both now and a decade from now. Are you surprised by the results?

3. Many say there is a “spiritual vacuum” at the heart of the China model. Indeed. While China has created an economic miracle in the past three decades, there is scant evidence that the Chinese people are, on average, any happier. What do you make of the rising dissatisfaction of the Chinese public?

4. We live in a transformational society. We face the same headaches today as the developed countries once did: concern about food safety, environmental pollution, social instability etc. How do we make sure the country is on the right track for high-quality rather than mere high-pace growth?

5. The dream of 1.3 billion Chinese will not only benefit China itself, but also the world as a whole. In what specific ways do you think Chinese values and cultures could bring positive changes to the world? Do we still need to refer to traditional wisdom to achieve the China dream?
