For more discussion, we're now joined in the studio by Professor Xu Hui and Professor Zhu Chenghu, both are from PLA National Defense University.

Let us talk a little bit about the Chinese navy ships joining the rescue and search for the missing malaysian airflight mh370, this is the first time for the Chinese military to carry out such an operation, what capabilities does the navy have to help, and what kind of cooperation we can expect between Chinese military and other countries’ ships and planes, civilian or military?

1.According to a draft budget report submitted to the National People’s Congress this year, China plans to raise its defense budget by 12.2 percent to 808.2 billion yuan, that’s nearly $132 billion, in 2014. It's the biggest jump in spending since a 12.7% rise in 2011. Foreign media is reporting that it’s a worrying development for China’s neighbours. Are those worries understandable? How should China allay any fears about its military expansion?

2.What are China's priorities for military spending in 2014? Premier Li told the NPC that China should become a maritime power; so will much of the money go to the navy?

3.Last November, China decided to establish a state security committee with President Xi Jinping at its head. Why did China set up the security committee now? What role does it have in shaping China's defense policies?

4.China has announced plans to reform the military with the stated aim of to optimizing the size and structure of the army, reforming the leadership system, and reducing non-combat institutions and personnel. Why should China reform its army? What are the aims of China’s military reform?
