PLA Navy sails through "first island chain"

03-11-2014 21:36 BJT Special Report: 2014 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

In another sign of China's growing maritime might, the PLA Navy in recent years has recorded several voyages through the "first island chain".

The "first island chain" refers to the series of archipelagos off the mainland coast, including Japan’s Ryukyu Islands, China’s Taiwan and the northern Philippines. In the 1950s, Washington regarded the chain as an important barrier to contain China and other communist countries. The PLA navy has crossed the first island chain through several points, including the Bashi Channel, Miyako Strait, and now Soya Strait.

The repeated crossings show that the PLA navy is now capable of sending and supporting its ships in channels far from land.
