Online survey of the new family planning policy

Whether China's second child policy will lead to a surge in births has been hotly debated online. A recent online survey by CCTV NEWS asked netizens if they were planning on taking advantage of the new family planning policy. The poll, which was posted on Sina Weibo, attracted a range of responses.

One user wrote: "I'd like to have two kids if I can afford it, because growing up alone can lead to loneliness and a lack of leadership and cooperation skills, as well as less consideration for others." But others argued that a fear of loneliness shouldn't dictate parents' decisions, since "kids will have a lot of friends after they enter kindergarten." Some also contended that "growing up alone in itself is not a bad thing since it can teach you to be independent." The financial cost of having a second child was another key concern for many. One respondent said, "It’s too much burden to have another child. I don't have that much energy and time." Still, for some, the joys of family outweigh any cost: "Having a brother of my own is one of the happiest things in my life."

"Kids will have a lot of friends after they enter kindergarten. They won't be lonely. My schoolmates are all only-children and they didn’t have any problems growing up alone."
