Potala: The palace closest to heaven

03-11-2010 08:25 BJT Special Report:2010 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

Looming over the capital city of Lhasa, the Potala Palace represents the essence of ancient Tibetan architectural art. More than 1,300 years ago, the Tibetan King Songtsan Gampu built the palace for his wife, princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty. Thanks to this matrimony, the Potala Palace has become a symbol of ethnic unity.

"Behind me is Potala Palace, the tallest building on the planet before the first skyscrapers were built. Now it has become a museum, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world. "

Overcoming altitude stress, pilgrims and tourists climb uphill on winding flights of steps. The trek is strenuous, but they soon discover that the reward is well worth the effort.
