In the two years that have passed since the Wenchuan earthquake, many artists have used their formidable talents to express the grief of a nation. To pay tribute to those who were lost as well as those who still struggle to rebuild, a concert called "Requiem of the Earth" was performed on Wednesday night at Beijing's National Center for the Performing Arts.

The composer, Guan Xia, hopes that the seventy-minute work of music will help to heal heavy hearts. Under the baton of Michel Plasson, the China National Symphony Orchestra presents a touching interpretation of the intensely solemn work.

Guan called this the most difficult piece of music he has ever composed, due to the overwhelming grief he felt. In addition to strings and winds, the work features choral parts and the wistful sounds of a Qiang ethnic flute.
