9th Chinese Bridge conducts preliminary round in Germany

It's time for Chinese language enthusiasts in Germany to put what they've learnt to the test. The 9th Chinese Bridge -- The Chinese Language Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students has conducted its preliminary round at the University of Trier in Germany. Who's the best Chinese language speaker in Germany?

Eleven students from eight universities and colleges around Germany participated in the competition. The event was comprised of three parts, including prepared speech, questions and answers, and a performance section which required contestants to showcase their skills that are closely associated with Chinese language and culture.

This time around the competition also focused on the theme of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Contestants need to impress the judges with not only their mastery of the Chinese language itself, but also the profound cultural traditions and history of China.

In the end, a student from the University of Freiburg won the first prize of the preliminary round. She together with the other two second prize winners from Frankfurt University will join the final competition to be held in China.

Yang Xiaoqing, principal of the Confucius Institute of the University of Trier, said she was greatly impressed by the confidence and the versatility of contestants this year.

I was deeply touched when the contestants explained that learning Chinese has given them so much fun."

In recent years the Chinese language has enjoyed a growing popularity in colleges and university across Germany. The Chinese proficiency competition has become a platform for foreign students to demonstrate the charm of the language, the culture and the hospitality of the Chinese people.
