Saturday was the National Pavilion Day for Japan at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Tossing aside the usual stage performance, Japan Pavilion Day gave visitors a special welcoming ceremony. What was it all about? Let's take a look.

After a month long voyage, an envoy vessel arrived in Shanghai to coincide with the grand occasion.

The ship is a remake of a Tang Dynasty vessel that would have sailed the oceans more than one thousand years ago. It was a time when Japanese envoys visited China for cultural exchanges and exchange programmes between the two countries continue to the present day.

The vessel kicked off its cruise in May the 8th in Osaka.

Japanese actor Ken Watanabe, along with a number of literati and showbiz stars in the country are on board to promote Japanese art and culture at the pavilion.

The Japan Pavilion highlights the role of advanced ecological technology in helping humans achieve a more comfortable life and confidence in the future. The Japan Pavilion is nicknamed "Purple Silkworm Island" because it's covered by a purple membrane material.
