"The Karate Kid" has already opened at No. 1 with $56 million in the U.S. On Tuesday the film premieres in Beijing, where it is known by its Chinese name, which translates into "Kung Fu Dream." Hollywood actor Will Smith and his family joined Jackie Chan at a press conference for the film here in the capital.

Ahead of the film's premiere, stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, along with his famous parents Will and Jada, held a press conference in the city.

Will Smith, and his wife Jada, are producers on the film. At the press conference, Will joked that his son's film is proving to be more successful than some of his own movies.

Will Smith, said, "I am very excited about the success of the film in the States, although I am a little concerned that it passed most of my movies. But it's ok, I love him very much."

Chan however played down the success in the US, saying the markets and expectations between the two nations were still quite different.

Jackie Chan, Actor, said, "Sometimes a movie gets successful in the US but its not a promise that it will be successful in China. Being successful in China does not mean that you will be successful in the US. Being successful in both countries does not indicate that you will be successful in south eastern Asia. But when you ask yourself whether you tried your best with your whole heart to make a movie, if you say 'yes' than that is enough."

Will Smith has only had two debuts bigger than "The Karate Kid." "I am Legend" debuted with $77.2 million, while "Hancock" debuted with $62.6 million.

In "The Karate Kid" Jaden plays Dre, a young American who moves to China with his mother. While trying to adapt to the lifestyle difference, Dre becomes a target for bullies at school, but then Dre meets Mr. Han, the handyman in the building where Dre lives with his mother.

Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan is the 2010 version of the iconic Mr. Miyagi character from the 1984 version. In the new film, Mr. Han teaches Dre Kung Fu, which allows him to overcome his bullies.

The film marks a change for Jackie Chan who takes on his first serious role after a string of action comedy parts.

Smith and family came to China to promote the film's release, and he hopes that the joint Chinese-US production could pave the way for future movies.
