Wu Guanzhong, the famous master of Chinese painting has passed away in Beijing Hospital at the age of 91.
Wu was born in China's eastern Jiangsu Province. He went to France in 1947 to study western painting styles. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he returned to the country and taught at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and Tsinghua University.
Recognized as the father of modern Chinese painting at home and abroad, Wu integrated Chinese ink and wash with western painting methods. In 1992, the British Museum held a personal exhibition of the painter.
Demand for his works is high, and sales at public auctions have reached 31.7 million US dollars. But he lived a simple life and donated hundreds of his works to public museums.
