At the World Expo, more than one million visitors have checked out a Buddha statue inside the Urban Footprint Pavilion. This piece is a perfect example of how an art relic is not valued by its size, but by its extraordinary craftsmanship.
This lying Buddha, carved over two hundred years ago from white marble, was on exhibition at the Tibetan Museum before it graced the Urban Footprint Pavilion at the World Expo.
Chen Xiejun, director of Shanghai Museum, said, "It was very elaborately carved, and the white marble is also very rare for this genre."
Except for the rare material that it is carved from, the Buddha is also adored for its serene posture and expression. It's face and shoulders are glitterd with gold, while its crest was applied with indigo.
