An Expo-themed Huju opera hit the stage of Yi Fu Theatre on Monday. Let's hear more about "Pastoral Dreams."
"Pastoral Dreams" tells the story of Qin Yao, a patriotic entrepreneur in 1930s' Shanghai. Qin dedicated his whole life to manufacturing world-class silk and exhibiting it at a World Expo. But as China was torn up by war fires at that time, his dream failed to come true during his generation, and the dream was passed to his children.
As China became stronger, Qin Yao's descendents finally accomplished the mission. In the play, the personal destinies of each character is closely interwoven with the greater changes of the country. The production expresses the strong feelings that Chinese people hold towards the World Expo.

more about "Pastoral Dreams."
Because of the unique language and musical style of Huju opera, audiences tend to regard it as less capable in managing grand scenes and themes, and is most suitable for telling petty bourgeois love stories. This time, the team behind "Pastoral Dreams" has made great efforts to design the stage and music in a way that makes the play authentic and splendid.
"Pastoral Dreams" has been staged and well-received in several suburban theatres around Shanghai. Audiences praise the piece for its creativity and sincerity.
