Dance drama "Railway Guerrilla" will march onto the stage in the days prior to Army Day on August 1st.
The dance piece is one of the rare mainstream works in recent years, and was commissioned to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
Adapted from its namesake work of literature, "Railway Guerrilla" depicts the determined fight of the PLA against invading enemies. The story is based in east China's Shandong province, home to the Guzi, Jiaozhou, and Haiyang dance forms.
The rich folk culture in Shandong gives the characters a fuller image.
"Railyway Guerrilla" has garnered the country's top-notch cast and crew. Zhao Jiping, who has composed music for films such as Yellow Earth, Grand Parade, Red Sorghum, and Farewell My Concubine, supervised the composition for this production. Yang Xiaoyang, who is essential to productions like "Road to Revival", and the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, is helming "Railway Guerrilla."

Zhao Jiping, music supervisor, said, "The dance has a strong local flavor. It's been a challenge to combine a mainstream topic with contemporary aesthetics."
The dance is presented by the Song and Dance Ensemble of the PLA General Political Department. "Railway Guerrilla" premieres at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing from July 30th to August 3rd.
