Central Italy has been struck with lavender fever. The aromatic flower is currently in full bloom and is helping to establish the lavender industry in the historical Tuscia region as a key competitor to France.

The flower's allure has not been lost on visitors to Italy's first Lavender Festival in Tuscania, near Viterbo. There, they can learn how the essential oil is extracted through a filtration process that collects the oil drop by drop.

Those who attend the Lavender Festival are also treated to the region's famed lavender risotto. And they can visit the organic planting lavender farms.
