The 13th annual Zanzibar International Film Festival opened last Saturday in the popular tourist destination that is also a world heritage site.

The event showcases over 100 African and international films and attracts fans from all over the world.

Joseph Miza, principal secretary at the Zanzibar Tourism Ministry, opened the festival. This year's festival theme is "Hopes in Harmony," to emphasize national unity and democratic values. It has also dedicated Swahili Day to Tanzanian-made films with eight films to be screened.

Zanzibar's film festival is not just about movies. Festival-goers are also treated to local and international music as part of some of the activities on hand.

Originally funded by foreign donors, today, half of the money for the event comes from local organizations.

The festival runs through next Sunday.
