Ethic art gems showcased in S. China

The 4th China Ethnic Minority Folk Art Showcase got underway on Monday in Guiyang, the capital of Southwest China's Guizhou Province. The city will host quite a variety of performances with 36 programs from 15 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions.

41 different art forms of 15 ethnicities will be showcased, including traditional ballads intoning of life and romance, as well as modern productions. Prizes for best actor, best program, and best new artist are all part of the fun.

The opening ceremony was an extravaganza of ethnic art. The hosts presented a clapper talk and lantern storytelling. A delegation from Inner Mongolia brought a Holboo group, that is a storytelling group with musical accompaniment; they performed "Ode to Huhhot."

Other performances include Xu Zao, also known as "double songs", from the Shui ethnic group, singing accompanied by eight instruments, from the Biyi ethnic group, and Pipa ballads from Guizhou's neighboring province Sichuan.

All the programs were derived from ancient people's field work, ceremonial occasions, or religious worship. Now, these art forms are embracing a modern revival.
