Musical director Seiji Ozawa plans a comeback

The acclaimed conductor Seiji Ozawa is planning a comeback concert in his native Japan next month.

The musical director of the Vienna State Opera was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in January and has since undergone surgery and several months of treatment. He will perform at the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan on September 5th.

Ozawa was forced to cancel a string of appearances in Europe planned for December.

Before joining the Vienna opera in 2002, he served 29 years as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
