A group of children took time out of their summer vacation to go up against each other in a cook-offover the weekend.
The event is part of the staple program at the World Expo that allows children to experience their desired future occupations.
Not every child here wants to be a professional chef when they grow up, but they all say that knowing some basic culinary techniques has a practical appeal.
These little chefs were required to finish an appointed dish and an optional dish that they are skilled at preparing.
Some of them were obviously influenced by their regional culinary traditions. For the appointed dish of chicken wings and mushrooms, Li Runke from Chengdu decided to make it according to the typically spicy flavor of Sichuan.
The rookie chef was a little hasty and didn't cook the chicken thoroughly enough, but the judges still praised his ingenuity.

9-year-old Chen Xilei from Guangzhou has every potential to be an expert chef. Her Cantonese cuisine has conquered all the taste buds of the judges.
Judge said, "Her level is beyond my imagination. Her cooking process is very logical. It's not like a 9-year-old, but a full grown-up. So I shall say she is very talented at cooking."
Chef Chen says that such cook-off can help her cultivate her skills for household chores, and gain a sense of achievement.
Chen Xilei, contestant, said, "This event can train us to cook for ourselves. Dad and mom are very tired after work, and if I learned to cook, they would not have to work so hard at home."
A parent said, "It's not only an elevation of their ability, but an attainment of positive attitude of life."
The contest was held in the "Music Bay" pavilion of the World Expo Park. It's the only venue dedicated to kids during the expo. Kids are able to sample 30 different professions there.
