Play tells of Peking Man's love

09-14-2010 09:05 BJT

Peking Man archeological site in Beijing's suburb area Zhoukoudian recalls Beijing, not only as the nation's capital for hundreds of years, but it boasts one of the earliest finds of human remains in China.

Now, the Zhoukoudian Museum has prepared a drama to depict the lives, and loves of Peking Man.

The play "Peking Man's Love Story" focuses on an unlikely group of people, the ape men and women, who lived in Beijing half a million years ago. Telling of their birth, death, love and hate, and their stalwart struggles with nature, which often came in the form of floods or wild beasts.

Definitely a love story has been woven in, which is the biggest selling point of the play. But its not for sensationalism. The Zhoukoudian Peking Man Archeological site wants, through this play, to provide a comprehensive view of Peking Man's life.

Zhao Jiakun, Dir. Publicity Dept., Fangshan District CPC. Committee, said, "Zhoukoudian archeological site was enlisted in the first batch of world cultural heritage items by UNESCO in 1987. But the question is how do we let more people know about the heritage so they will get involved in protecting it. We thought of this way to pass it around, making a play, to inform people of Peking Man's life."

"Peking Man's Love Story" will be staged at Beijing Haidian Theater through to September 23rd. Then there will be a perennial show at the site itself, to entertain the visitors there.

In addition, the site is making efforts to use animated on-screen works to introduce Peking Man to more people.
