Friday marks the pavilion day of Papua New Guinea at the current Shanghai World Expo. The Oceania island country is presenting the untouched nature and the diverse indigenous culture to urbanites. So let's pop over to the pavilion and get closer to nature.

Papua New Guinea is composed of more than 600 islands in southwestern Pacific Ocean. It's one of the most diverse countries on earth. It has over 850 indigenous languages and at least as many traditional societies, out of a population of just under 7 million.

It's one of the most rural, with only 18 percent of its people living in urban centers. The country is one of the world's least explored, culturally and geographically. Many undiscovered plants and animals are thought to exist in the interiors of the islands.

One well-known territory is the southwest of the island Papua: the paradise of crocodiles. The endless swamp is home to 19 of the world's 23 existing crocodile species. For the locals here, a traditional canoe is the only transportation to pass through the world of the reptile.

Far before Spanish explorers found the islands in the early 16th century, there were human remains dating back some 50,000 years. Papua New Guinea won a peaceful independence in 1975. The four century colonial period of Holland, Britain, Germany and Australia hasn't eroded the distinctive culture of the local people. Traditional hand-made art crafts are scattered throughout the pavilion telling how their owners keep harmonious relations between humans and nature.
