The 8th China Folk Arts Festival began in North China's Shanxi province on Sunday.

It's the largest one in the event's history, featuring over thirty local performance troupes all hoping to win a Shanhua Awards.

Ethnic performers from Tibet, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Yunan, and Sichuan are participating in the festival.

The iron stick performance from Shanxi has performers tied to a iron stick, elevated above the ground, then they dance as if they are suspend in mid-air.

The performance dates back more than 800 years ago and was also listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The festival is intended to highlight the protection of cultural heritage, and will continue to put those heritages on display through Thursday.
