The sudden rain Sunday in Beijing didn't dampen the enthusiasm of music lovers in the city as they flocked to the downtown PLA Theater to enjoy a concert presented by musicians from the Western African country of Cape Verde.

One of the heavy weights taking to the stage was Grammy Award winning Cesaria Evora, who's now 69 years old.

The lilting refrains of Cesaria Evora's music swirled around the auditorium. Her melancholy yet soothing voice, singing about heartache and bitter-sweet memories, seemed to provide a comfortable numb for those who are away from home, and those who are sometimes blinded by mundane business.

Evora is internationally known as the best practitioner of Morna, a music genre from the island country of Cape Verde which is compared by critics to the blues of the United States and tango of Argentina. Over the years, Evora has toured around the world with numerous shows. Her album "Voice of Love" picked up a Grammy for Best Contemporary World Music in 2004.

Grammy Award winning Cesaria Evora(L), nicknamed "The Barefoot Diva"

Nicknamed "The Barefoot Diva", Evora has never performed with her shoes on. And Sunday night's show was no exception.

Cesaria Evora, Cape Verdean artist, said, "I don't like shoes. I like to walk barefoot. I've been performing barefoot since the beginning of my singing career. So that's why my first record released in France is called 'The Barefoot Diva'".

Joining the big night were also two popular Cape Verdean musicians of the younger generation-- Tcheka, whose guitar improvisation provides a fresh perspective of the Cape Verde sound, and Mayra Andrade, who balances her folk music roots with bossa nova, jazz, samba, and even French Chanson.

Sunday's show was put up as a follow-up to the National Pavilion Day of Cape Verde at the Shanghai Expo, which fell on October the 8th.
