This October, Chinese artists gather in Singapore to commemorate 20 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

A ballet gala by the National Ballet of China kicked off the cultural celebration on Friday.

As the only national ballet company in China, the fifty-year-old ensemble showcased their best-known works: "Raise the Red Lantern" and "Butterfly Lovers."

Both pieces represent the unique fusion of Western ballet and Chinese culture. The troupe also staged the classical ballet "Swan Lake", as well as many contemporary works such as "Close Your Eyes When Night Falls."

Later in the month, an oil painting and photo exhibition will be opened free to the public to mark the wide-ranging ties between China and Singapore.
