The Asian country of Laos celebrates its National Pavilion Day on Tuesday. Laos is a landlocked country located in Southeast Asia.
The Laos Pavilion fully displays the elegance and charm of the country, with exhibitions showcasing various aspects of the ancient city Luang Prabang, notable as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visitors to the Laos Pavilion will first be welcomed by the scaled-down replica of the Wat Xieng Thong, a temple highlight of Luang Prabang.
The word "Wat" in the Lao language means "Temple", and Wat Xieng Thong refers to "The Temple of the Golden City." Wat Xieng Thong is located on a peninsula in between the Mekong and Khan rivers. It is the largest and one of the most grander temples among the 30 ancient temples existing in Luang Prabang today.
The local people of Laos love to gather at Wat Xieng Thong on the first day of every new year, praying for prosperity and harmony in the days to come.
Legends have it that there used to be a gigantic tree growing in front of the major hall of Wat Xieng Thong. Two prophets predicted that there would be a city developing and prospering nearby the tree in the future. The prophesy surprisingly came true, with the city of Luang Prabang later appearing in the region. People carved patterns of the giant tree on the walls of Wat Xieng Thong in order to remember the two wise men.
