Harbin Snow Sculpture Art Expo has opened on the city's tourist spot "Sun Island" since Tuesday. As part of the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, the expo has drawn crowds from near and far with a theme connecting Harbin and Italy.

Dozens of huge snow sculptures with diverse shapes and themes are welcoming visitors, with the biggest piece measuring over 100 meters long. It took 200 workers 14 days to complete.

The expo is co-organized by Harbin and Italian cities Innichen and Virgilio. So an Italian flavor prevails here.

This artist is working on a piece inspired by something representing the country's culture... Italian noodles.

One Snow Sculptor said, "Marco Polo brought Chinese noodles to Italy, which evolved into Italian noodles. Fine details are needed in this work."

Although many villages around Harbin are covered by snow this time of year, the houses made out of snow still make a spectacle. Inside the snow dwellings visitors can get a glimpse of how people live in the snowy northeast villages of China.

Tourists can also see how a snow sculpture comes into being. Artificial snow is used to create the sculpture for it is more weather-resistant and less prone to turn dark. And the snow has to be compressed to be sturdy enough for the chisels to work on.

The Harbin Snow Sculpture Art Expo has more than 300 art pieces created by international craftsmen.
