When talking about Hakka culture, people often think of the lively folk tunes and sturdy round earth buildings of Fujian. To further promote this World Heritage item, the dance opera called "The Charm of Earth Buildings" will soon grace the stage at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

"The Charm of Earth Buildings" tells the story of hard-working Hakka people's lives. It depicts the difficult process of how Hakka people migrated from the central plains of modern-day Henan province, to west Fujian province. The dance opera shows how the people build earth buildings and pass their knowledge on to the next generation.

Lai Yongsheng, Director of "The Charm of Earth Buildings", said, ”"Our layout and stage design of this dance opera are to show the original Hakka people's lives. The folk songs are performed throughout the opera to show audiences the local Hakka features."

In order to mostly reflect the original Hakka life, the actors are mostly Hakka people themselves. The music used is carefully selected from Hakka folk songs.
