Placido Domingo has celebrated his 70th birthday at Madrid's Teatro Real. He was honored with performances including pieces by Wagner, Strauss, Bizet and Verdi among others.

Placido Domingo, also known as one third of the Three Tenors, alongside Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, was born into a family of singers in Spain in 1941.

At the age of eight, he left Spain with his family and moved to Mexico where he began to study his craft of music.

The tenor made his operatic debut in "La Traviata" at Monterrey, before signing up with the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv for two and a half years, taking on 12 different roles.

Domingo has performed in over 130 operas but said it was very difficult to say which one would be his favorite.

Placido Domingo, Tenor, said, "For me each character is a discovery, and when you ask me what opera is the one you most like, I say, well look, it's the one I have to interpret on the day because if I did not think it was the best then I would not do it, on this day, I feel this opera is the best."

He has released many recordings of his music and still continues to record today.

He's won countless awards including a Latin Grammy, a Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement honor and a Honorary Knighthood.

And, as well as singing, Domingo has conducted operas and concerts and also currently serves as the General Director of Washington National Opera.
