What would be better to see at the Lantern Festival than showing off traditional crafts and skills that are recognized as the nation's intangible cultural heritage? From exquisite dough figurines, to unique folk art performances, all are on show to welcome the arrival of spring.

Wittily kneaded dough figurines

A dozen dough figurine makers are showing off their skills in Weihai of east China's Shandong Province. In mere minutes, a doughy paste is cleverly shaped into one of several adorable looking Chinese zodiac animals.

Skilled masters from out of town also join their peers in kneading sweet dumplings and flower-like steamed buns, which are as alluring in appearance as they are in taste.

Sparkling flower shower

Also in Shandong Province, local villagers in Zibo city are captivated by the performance of the sparkling flower shower. The striking splashing flowers are created by spinning wrought iron.

This traditional art originated in the northern Song Dynasty, and has since grown popular especially in eastern parts of China. The iron flower performance set the village visually on fire, winning non-stop applause and cheers from the locals.
