Also in Xi'an, a grand showcase of folk heritages of China's vast western regions was staged on Thursday.

The rich oral and intangible heritages of the western region were given a full manifestation through the heirs of each craft who took part in the "West Intangible Heritages Showcase."

China's western regions boast the most items of intangible heritages in the country. Two-thirds of them are possessed by people of various ethnic minorities including Ugyur, Kazak, Naxi, Zhuang, Mongolian, Hui and Dai.

The event will display nearly one hundred intangible heritage items that have been inscribed on the national intangible heritage list.

Awareness of national heritage, physical and cultural, and a desire to preserve it, seems to be on the increase across the globe. In addition to physical heritage resources, cultural heritage is increasingly seen as a living bridge linking aspects of a population's history and traditions with its contemporary life.

Intangible cultural heritage is made up of customs, living art forms and other traditions that are passed down over many years within a nation, social group or family, and are considered the valuable and important property of all its members.

The city of Xi'an is extremely rich in history and is often regarded as the cradle of Chinese civilization. The image of Xi'an as the location of the tomb of Emperor Qin Shihuang and the Terracotta Army is indelibly inscribed in the consciousness of countless numbers of people across the globe. But as well as the Terracotta Army and other iconic symbols of Xi'an history and heritage, the city holds a wealth of intangible cultural heritage resources. Shadow play, paper cutting, and folk opera are among the best known.
