In April, 2010, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Yushu county in Southwest China's Qinghai Province, wrecking havoc on local historic relics. One year after the quake, a major salvage project will soon be underway, backed up by both the central and local government.

The Chan Temple is a Tibetan-Buddhism holy site in Yushu with a history of 700 years.

It is among one of the worst hit historic sites during last year's earthquake. Eighty percent of the temple's wall was toppled down. Two of its three main halls were totally devastated, with many Buddhist sculptures and sutras scattering among the relics.

Investigations show that the ancient temple is located in an earthquake-active zone. So it has decided that a relic park will be built at the original site of the temple, while the temple itself will be rebuilt ten kilometers away. Construction is set to start in mid April.

Some 47 relic sites in Yushu have fallen victim to the 2010 earthquake.

The central government has earmarked 500 million RMB to subsidize a major restoration and preservation project there.

Top archeologists and construction experts from around China will be assembled in Yushu to assist in the project.
