Mexico City's Museum of Anthropology is preparing hundreds of articles of clothing that reveal the symbolism and use of birds and feathers. The exhibition is called "Wings of the Indigenous World". Now let's visit Mexico to have a look.

For decades researchers believed this cotton garment, was a huipil, or blouse, worn by La Malinche, Hernan Cortes' beautiful, but apparently unreliable, interpreter and mistress.

The nearly 500-year-old blouse had been attributed to her due to similarities of huipils worn by her and portrayed in manuscript illustrations. But studies carried out in 1999 determined the garment had actually been made between 1770 and 1800.

Never-before-seen garments made by indigenous people, decorated with diverse birds, feathered serpents and purple dyed thread will also go on display.

Diana Magaloni, director of Mexico's Museum of Anthropology, said, "One is able to see that knowledge lives on, changes, because it always adapts but that basic knowledge of Mexican and Mesoamerica indigenous societies still lives on through their art."

The display will be divided into six sections: Prodigal birds, birds in myths, mythical birds, dancing birds, dancing warriors, and offering and sacrifice.

Museum ethnography researcher, Arturo Gomez, spoke of the importance of birds in indigenous cultures.

Arturo Gomez, Museum Ethnography researcher, said, "Birds have enormous importance in the daily and ritual life of indigenous people. Their myths evoke birds in their origins. A lot of birds participated in the building of the universe and in order to create man."

La Malinche, who helped Cortes during the Spanish conquest, has become a symbol of treason in Mexico.

The exhibition at the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City will open on May the 9th.

The exhibition is called "Wings of the Indigenous World".
