China Charity Federation and China National Peking Opera Company have staged ten free performances for the public across Beijing.

Though the charity series ended on a high note on Tuesday night, more shows have been promised for next year.

Huadan is the leading star on the stage of the closing performance. In Peking Opera, huadan represents the role of various unmarried women. And most of the roles follow the style created by late Peking Opera artist Xun Huisheng, a contemporary of Mei Lanfang, Cheng Yanqiu and Shang Xiaoyun.

The four artists are very well known in China as the most established actors to play females on the stage through Peking Opera in the first half of the twentieth century. All had abstracted their own manners of performance to interpret woman, over the barrier of gender and age.

Lv Huimin, Peking Opera singer, said, "Actually, the best age to present a role of "huadan" is in one's 40s. A twenty year old singer's performance are usually naive like this....it's cute but not rich. A veteran performer could control it better and express the heart of the role through every possible details, like these. See, it's quite different. "

One of my classmates is a die-hard fan of the genre and performs very well. I also wouldn't mind buying a ticket to watch a Peking Opera performance."

The ten charity performances across Beijing have shared some of the most popular works of Peking Opera from selected classic traditional works to modern ones.

Song Guanlin, director of China National Peking Opera Company, said, "With the combined support of China's Ministries of Education, Culture and Finance, our company has performed for college students in more than 150 universities across the country since 2004. We've also taken Peking Opera to soldiers and local people in some of the most remote areas in China. Our company carries a duty to share the art with a broad range of viewers. "
