The annual Beijing Modern Music Festival continues to roll out concerts of various styles. A symphony concert celebrating the beautiful landscapes of southern China graced the stage of the Beijing Concert Hall Thursday night. The performance stood out for its subtle combination of modern music elements and traditional Chinese literature. What's that all about?

This piece, composed by Chinese musician Ye Xiaogang, is inspired by a Tang Dynasty poem lauding the juicy Lichee fruit that grows in southern China. The tenor's flowing yet powerful voice was echoed by a symphony orchestra, resulting in a perfect music collaboration.

Ye Xiaogang, Director of Beijing Modern Music Festival, said, "I've chosen four poems, with each from the Tang, Song, Ming and Qing Dynasties respectively for the lyrics. I've incorporated both the poetry reading and the classical music instruments to convey my understanding of the ancient Chinese culture to audiences."

Ye adds that he also drew inspiration from Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji, whose graceful rhymes brought the beauty of a glamorous moon on a late autumn night to an extreme.

The night of music featured commissioned productions by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao, which aims at putting the Special Administrative Region of China on the map of the nation's music scene.
