The elite of Chinese contemporary dramas will get their time in the spotlight at the world's largest and most prestigious drama event, the 65th Avignon Festival. Between July 8th and 31st, six Chinese plays will be staged and judged by their international counterparts in France.

The French Ambassador to China, Sylvie Bermann, joined officials from the Ministry of Culture and renowned director Meng Jinghui to announce the significant project titled "China Kisses" in Beijing on Monday.

The six plays included in the "Chinese Project" are remarkable pieces created in the last three years. They include pioneering director Meng Jinghui's latest musical "The Love of Three Oranges", drama "Hamlet Machine" by Wang Chong, multimedia play "Reading-Mistake" by Feng Jiangzhou and Zhang Lin, "Cooking a Dream" by Huang Ying, "Born in July" by Xin Xin, and a musical poetry "If the World Goes Blind" by Shao Zehui.

The Avignon Festival is an annual arts festival held in French city of Avignon. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, it is the oldest extant festival in France and one of the world's greatest. The Festival consists of two parts, "In" and "Off". The Festival Off is an original cultural experience, a precious testimony of the vitality of the living art. And all the six pieces will be performed indoor and outdoor at the coveted "Off" for 24 consecutive days.

The French Ambassador regards the project as an important
leap forward for Sino-French drama exchange.

Sylvie Bermann, French Ambassador to China, said, "Every summer the city of Avignon is transformed into a huge drama stage because of the festival. We are glad to see that the "Off" Festival has signed a three-year cooperative agreement with the Beijing Fringe Festival and thus opened a new and broader platform for China-France art communications. From this summer, we will see more Chinese elements at Avignon and French inspirations in the Beijing Fringe Festival, and we are looking forward to it."

All the six plays have been staged at the Beijing Fringe Festival. Originally named the "Beijing Youth Theater Festival", Fringe has been held every September since 2008. In three short years the annual event has garnered a growing reputation for introducing emerging theater artists to the Chinese audiences.

Meng Jinghui, who is one of the initiators of the event, and has served as the artistic
director, is one of the front runners of Chinese contemporary theater. He expresses his
expectations to the forthcoming showcase.

Meng Jinghui said, "So far we are not able to know the feedback. What we are trying to deliver is the young and vitalized stage art. It is not traditional, but has been reinterpreted by the young directors and actors' contemporary perspectives. And more importantly, we are very professional. I wish the drama practitioners and audiences who participate in the festival will get some knowledge of Chinese contemporary drama and its distinctiveness and dynamic."

During the month long visit, the Chinese delegation will organize a "Chinese Day" activity, a green camping project, a drama concert, as well as workshops, forums and exhibitions.

In return, six authentic French plays from the Avignon Festival will be landed at the fourth Beijing Fringe Festival in September.
