86 Guqin musicians and critics have descended on Chengdu for a Guqin concert celebrating the poetic heavenly sounds.

The drizzle on Monday didn't dampen the enthusiasm of Guqin lovers at all.

The refrained sprinkle only complemented the subtlety of the Guqin music and exhilarated the spirit of every audience member.

Guqin masters treated spectators with timeless pieces of the plucked 7-stringed musical instrument of the zither family, that has a history of around 5-thousand years.

Liu Chicheng of the Mei'an School of Guqin interpreted a number called "Pounding the Washing-mallets." The piece was inspired by a Tang Dynasty poem depicting a wife's love for her soldier husband who was far away from home patrolling the borders of his country.

It was then followed by a tune saturated with ethnic flavor by Guqin master Gong Yi.

Guqin is regarded as a musical instrument of great subtlety and refinement. It once enjoyed great popularity among the literati of the olden times in China, who revered Guqin as the "instrument of the sages."

In 2003, Guqin was proclaimed as one of the masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
