World renowned circus troupe, Cirque du Soleil will premiere its newest acrobatic spectacle later this month in New York City. Behind all the razzle dazzle on stage, are months of preparation back stage. Let's take a look.

Rock-and-roll and circus arts are just two of the ingredients that make up Cirque du Soleil's latest spectacle, "Zarkana." The show tells the story of a magician who has lost not only his powers, but also the love of his life.

Director of Zarkana said he wanted to pay tribute to the 1930s when circus was in its golden age in America. The 80-year-old venue, Radio City Music Hall was his inspiration.

Francois Girard, director, said, "We wanted to go back to the roots of Circus - the golden age of circus in America. Which actually pretty well corresponds to the time that this place was built."

75 performers from 15 countries made up the team for Zarkana. Russian trapeze artist Artem said joining Cirque is a dream come true. However, he said the work isn't easy.

Artem Ledovskikh, acrobat, said, "This act is really unusual because we have about five trapeze flying and swinging in same time. This must be timed and good connection between the partner because it must be everything in time. When it's synchronized it looks really amazing."

And things don't get easier when it comes to the make-up. For every show, all performers do their own makeup. The process of learning this technique can take up to 10 hours.

More than 250 costumes featured in the show are hand-made at Montreal.

A staff member who has worked for ten years for the troupe calls her job a labor of love.

Marei-Claude Lheureux, make-up assistant, said, "It's intense, it ask a lot, you give all of yourself - you press you until the end but it's passionate at the same it's absolutely fascinating."

The new show Zarkana will run from June 29th until October 8th, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
