Restoring old film is a challenging job. The great majority of films made in the silent era have been lost forever.

To save China's artistic legacy rolled onto reels, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has launched a restoration project to digitalize the old film.

This is one of the workshops to restore vintage film at China Film Archive in Beijing. The restoration consists of ten steps and takes about a month to digitalize one movie, as long as it's not too badly damaged.

Sun Xianghui, deputy director of China Film Archive, said, "Most of the old films are faded in color, marked with nicks, and have a shaky image. It's hard to meet today's screening standards. That's why we have restored some of the classic films like 'Spring River Flows East' and 'Butterfly Lovers'. Now, today's viewers can watch a vintage film in good quality."

China State Administration of Radio, Film and TV initiated the protect in 2006. A special fund of 280 million yuan has been set aside for it. However, there is still a huge gap to fill. The amount from the government is enough to digitalize around 500 movies. But there are over 30-thousand vintage movies waiting, and most of them are the only copy.
