"Most beautiful girl in Nigeria" emerges

Nigeria's popular beauty show - The Most beautiful girl in Nigeria, held its 2011 pageant in Lagos on Saturday. A total of 36 girls competed for this year's title. The winner also qualifies to represent the country in the Miss World competition.

The show is now in its 24th edition and was screened live to millions of viewers across Nigeria.

Competitors represented various states in the country and battled it out in categories like indigenous attire and swim wear.

Participants were judged based on their beauty, ambitions, lifestyle and votes from the public.

Apart from earning this year's title, the winner will also represent Nigeria in the Miss World competition in London later this year, and walks away with about 20,000 US dollars as well as a brand new car.

Twenty year-old Sylvia Nduka was crowned the winner.

Nduka, an accounting student at The University of Lagos says she feels very honored, and plans to use her new title to raise awareness on social issues in the country.

Sylvia Nduka said, "It is a very good opportunity for me to change a lot of things in my life and make an impact on people's lives as well."

A number of fans at the event already had high expectations for their country's new beauty ambassador.

Gloria Chioma, guest at the beauty pageant, said, "It helps a lot when a beauty queen goes out there to represent the country, to act as the ambassador of Nigeria it helps a lot, this especially those who think Nigeria is a very bad place."

The pageant is thought to be a platform for many to launch careers. So far a number of former beauty queens have been able to establish successful careers in music, film, business and even politics.
