Ancient Silk Road town opens tourism festival

A city on the ancient Silk Road is developing its tourism industry by sharing its historical and natural resources with the world.

The Silk Road International Tourism Festival kicked off over the weekend in Lanzhou, capital of the northwest Gansu Province.

Jointly organized by the China National Tourism Administration and Gansu Provincial Government, the festival was officially inaugurated with a grand opening ceremony on Saturday evening at the Water Wheel Park in Lanzhou.

The one-month festival will hold 30 activities such as food and wine tasting, cultural performances and historical heritage exhibitions. It is expected to receive as much as ten million visitors from around the world.

The Silk Road was an important link for trade and cultural exchanges between China and South Asia in ancient times. It was believed to be the world's first information highway, trading goods, and exchanging different cultures and religions through the mountain and desert corridor of Gansu. The ancient travellers, pilgrims, artists, soldiers and merchants created a mixed culture and left behind a rich treasures -- military garrisons, the great wall, tombs and grottoes.

Gansu is famous for Dunhuang, the world renowned heritage site of the Mogao Grottoes and beautiful scenes of oasis. The Province is also well known for its ethnically diverse cultures, such as the Hui, Tibetan, Mongol and Kazak.

Gansu attracted more than 43 million visitors from home and abroad in 2010, generating tourism revenue of 24 billion yuan, or about 3.7 billion U.S. dollars.
