The Democratic People's Republic of Korea will be celebrating its national day in about one month's time.

To mark the 63rd anniversary of its birth, a grand traditional performance glorifying the history of the nation opened on Monday night and is set to run throughout the month. Let's take a look.

The performance, called "Arirang", is a huge synchronized dance and gymnastic show jointly presented by 100-thousand people.

"Arirang" is an old Korean folk song well-known among people in the DPRK and in South Korea. It's said to have been handed down some 600 years ago. The lyrics describe the obstacles the subject of the song encounters when he is getting through the Arirang mountain pass, demonstrating a positive attitude towards the hardships in life.

The dance routine uses major historical moments of the nation as its backdrop, and expresses the country's hope for peace and unification, and their love for the country. Children also take to the stage.
