Wine producers in Italy are using an ancient grape to produce a new vintage. The Bisol family planted a 15th Century walled vineyard on the Venetian island of Mazzorbo four years ago. Now they've reintroduced the near extinct Dorona white grape that was last grown on the site nearly 600 years ago.

Civilization on the island of Mazzorbo in the Venetian lagoon dates back to the fifth century A.D. when, many Northern Italians were forced to flee an invasion by the Huns. This history makes Mazzorbo one of the most ancient parts of Venice.

With the rise of Venice as a global superpower the importance of Mazzorbo declined and the island and its wine making tradition were abandoned.

But for the last four years the island has been home to the Venissa Estate winery.

Its owners, the Bisol family, have been growing a rare grape traditionally and historically cultivated on the island for the production of its lagoon wine.

This ancient walled vineyard was planted by the Bisol family in 2007 after saving a hundred of the near-extinct Dorona grape vines from the area.

The grape was only still found growing in the gardens of a few elderly residents who had kept the tradition alive.

The Bisol family has set about reintroducing Dorona on the very same plot that it was grown nearly 600 years ago.

Maurizio Saettini, wine producer, said, "The historical aspect of this wine is incredibly important. In this kind of research, we are not looking for absolute purity. The added value of this kind of wine is that it can only be made exclusively in this place. There is nothing else like it anywhere. Its flavor is strongly connected to the territory it is grown in."

The grapes were harvested for the first time in September 2010. Only 4,880 bottles will be available by reservation only in February 2012.
