Summer is perhaps the best time of the year for kids, when they can finally enjoy a long break from the stress of school and exams.

While urban kids can find a million ways to fill up their vacation, their peers in rural China have limited choices of entertainment. But the "Thousands of Films for Teenagers" campaign is doing something about that. Now it has become one of the most anticipated summer activities for young people in remote villages.

To bring a fruitful and healthy summer to rural teenagers, the Publicity Department and the Cultural Council of Jiangsu Province have co-organized the "Thousands of Films for Teenagers" Campaign. Throughout August, the program takes an enormous number of films across the Northern and Central parts of the province and shows them for free in villages.

Primitive projectors and screens are set up in open areas to entertain large crowds of villagers. With a lack of recreational facilities in the neighborhood, this impromptu cinema could be the first time for many villagers to get together and enjoy a film.

Wang Xiaoyu, a junior high student living in Lianshui County of northern Jiangsu Province, has arrived early with two friends to get good seats. The film on show today is "Death and Glory in Chengdu", a wartime film released last year. It depicts how Chinese people fought in the famous War of Resistance Against Japan.

Wang Xiaoyu said, "I usually watch films on the Internet or TV, but that doesn't feel as good as watching with so many people here. It somehow makes the story look more real and powerful."

Films based on the history during the founding of modern China are especially popular with the villagers here. They serve as a window through which rural teenagers understand, and establish a view on the course of development of the country.

Zhu Bohang, villager of Lianshui County, Jiangsu, said, "I like watching this kind of film as they nurture our passion, dignity and national pride."

Most of the films shown during the campaign depict wartime stories and revolutions that took place in modern China. They include the Founding of a Republic, the latest cinema production in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the founding of Communist Party of China, and some other famous titles such as We Must Not Forget the Long March.

There will be 50 films screened at each county in the province through August 31st.
