A Chinese musical set during the Tang dynasty has become the surprise sensation of the Edinburgh Festival, the world's biggest arts event.

"Qing Cheng," an original Chinese multimedia musical, staged it's world premier at the Festival to rapturous reviews. It tells the tragic tale of a Princess and a commoner, joined by love and revenge in the most breathtaking of theatrical settings. CCTV'S UK correspondent Richard Bestic was among those lucky enough to see it.

Qing Cheng is a Tang dynasty love story spanning a thousand years, but really it's a lavish display of 21st century special effects.

A stunning mix of multimedia projections and a live on stage presence.

Wang Lida, lead actress of "Qing Cheng", said, "The musical is a Chinese love story, but to suit an international audience we're using music with a wider appeal."

Tang Zixing, lead actor of "Qing Cheng", said, "The musical concept comes from the West. It has universal appeal, but we're combining it with elements of Chinese culture."

Chen Wei, director of "Qing Cheng", said, "Qing Cheng crosses the centuries, paying it dues to Broadway as much as it does to the teachings of Taoism."

Qing Cheng is set in Dujianyan in Sichuan Province, a magical UNESCO World Heritage site.

The stunning costumes designed by Tim Yip, who won an Oscar for his work in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

It has already been dubbed the surprise hit of this year's Edinburgh Festival.
