Beijing theatre fans got a real treat on Sunday night when the Chinese version of "Mamma Mia" debuted at the city's Century Theater. The Chinese language version of the popular musical is now wowing Beijing audiences after concluding a successful run in Shanghai.

The show is packed with timeless tunes and an absorbing storyline, but Beijing audiences have another reason to see the show. It's the first ever Chinese language version of a western musical. Also, it's the fourteenth language version newly added to the popular stage franchise.

Some movie stars were among the first to watch the show in Beijing, braving the thunderstorm in a display of their support.

Zhu Shimao, actor, said, "The beat, and the make-up are terrific!"

An audience member said, "As Chinese, what we eat are "fried pork slice with fish flavor". So a musical from the west can be better received, with Chinese elements rolled in."

"Young audience members can easily relate to it, because it's joyful, and interactive," said an audience member.

Yang Zhuqing, actress, said, "Beijing audiences are so supportive! As long as they think the production is good, they will give unreserved enthusiasm, for which we simply give more enthusiastic feedback."

The Chinese version of "Mamma Mia!" will run in Beijing for 80 performances over the next three months, which will create a record for a home-made musical played on the Chinese market.
