The deadline to apply for this year's 48th edition of the Golden Horse Awards concluded last Friday.

During the two-month time window, 81 productions from Taiwan applied for the major film award.

Although the movie industry in Taiwan has undergone a stagnant decade, a string of low-budget films since 2008 have surprised viewers and critics with winning box office results, such as "Cape No.7" and "Monga."

Now with predictably fierce competition for the upcoming Golden Horse Awards, industry insiders are expecting a promising resurrection.

Since its inception in 1962, the Golden Horse Awards has honored many excellent Chinese-language movies and outstanding filmmakers, and the awards itself has made paramount contributions to the industry's development.
